Charleville
We departed the Wool Scour at 11.00am and set
off for Charleville arriving approximately 2.30pm and checked into the Cobb and
Co Caravan Park. We met with a lovely couple from Warnambool who were on their
way home needing to be back to work early next week. In the morning we set off
to look at the Heritage House Museum in town and their collection was great with
many examples of tools and artefacts that the pioneers used. They also had a
beautiful collection of drays and carts as well as trucks, tractors, railway
ambulance and of course a Furphy Watercart (this and outback historic Pubs have
become a theme of our Wallaby). We then enjoyed morning tea in the Heinemanns
Bakery across the road. Dallas actually tasted the best Vannilla Slice on this trip in Heinemanns Bakery.
Following this we ventured out to the new nature park to identify native trees. We were not disappointed as there were clear examples of the Mulga, Gidgee and Billabong tree which had caused some confusion on our wallaby. After some shopping and lunch we went to the Historic Carones Hotel for a tour but alas all staff were at a training day for their liquor licence. The hotel was quiet with the bar and bottle shop still working but no other activity or services.

In the evening of the 31st 0f July
2018 at 7.30pm we went to the Cosmos
Centre and Observatory in Charleville. This was a very professionally ran
Observatory. The night sky was dark and crystal clear and we were professionally
guided through some of the best planet and star observations I have ever witnessed. If you
have a school group wanting to visit an Observatory this would be the best one
to take them to. From a very male oriented perspective the Observatory roof is
also something worth seeing in operation! Our nights observations guided by senior
guide Les Penrose included;
- · Albireo – Double Star
- · Jewel Box
- · Omega Centauri – Globular Cluster
- · Planet Saturn
- · Planet Jupiter, and
- · Planet Venus
·
Details of the above observations are in the copy of the nights
hand out shown above in this Blog.
Just magnificent and never to be forgotten!
Thank you Les and your Guides for your professionalism and expert guidance.
