Darwin to Kakadu and old Daly Waters

Nourlangie Aboriginal art

After picking up the car and a return trip to the Service Centre we were ready to move on to Kakadu determined to see parts of this great wet land park that we missed on our previous trip. After calling into the Northern Information Centre we set off for the Nourlangie Creek camping area to set up camp for the night. A great little managed camp with toilet and shower facilities on the banks of the Nourlangie Creek. The following morning we drove back to the Nourlangie Aboriginal art area and walked the 1.8 km track to view the art work and then walk up to the look out area.
The art work was as good as we have seen in other areas, if not, better and the views were superb. When packing up we discovered how close our camp was to the Nourlangie Creek. Another missed fishing opportunity!
After this visit we drove out to the Gunlom area with the intent to park the van and 4WD into the water hole and water fall. Unfortunately, there was not a suitable area to leave the van unattended. So, we came to one of those points in all travel where you have to accept the need for a change of plan.
This meant we would drive out to Pine Creek, camp the night at Pussy Cat Flats and then drive on to the old Daly Waters Pub for which we were not let down.
The night at the Daly Waters Pub, established in 1930 and now noted as a Heritage Listed building/s is a remarkable outcome for this Australian iconic pub! After booking an un-powered site for the van (no powered sites left and I think we counted up to 500 vans and Rv’s in  the powered site area) we soon settled in. After setting up we walked back to the pub and settled for a Coopers Pale Ale on tap and forgive me, a Coopers Pale Ale Shandy! After a couple of these the Country Music started up and it was a delight, just sounded like Slim Dusty singing on. Because we were late arriving we decided not to book dinner and did that in the van, a nice Spaghetti Bol. But we vowed to be back at the pub for breakfast in the morning. We fronted up at 7.30 am and ordered Pancakes and Eggs Benedict. Some 35 minutes later we both enjoyed a good country breakfast.
This put us in good stead to commence our eastward journey to Normanton via Borroloola and Barkly Station Roadhouse. Then the Barkly Highway into Qld.
